Racing at the Copa Brasil de Vela concluded on Saturday 11 January with Brazilian and British sailors dominating the podium.

The event, held from 4 January on the beach of San Francisco, Niterói, Brazil, with racing inside and outside Guanabara Bay, featured Brazilian and overseas entrants seeking training on Olympic and Paralympic waters.

Those who were present could see first-hand the world sailing greats like Robert Scheidt, Bruno Prada and Marit Bowmeester (NED).

The first to sail on the final day was the 49erFX. The fighting was very fierce between the Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze (BRA) and Great Britain's Frances Peters Nicola Groves with tight tactical racing. In the end the Brazilians won the fight.

"The race today was very exciting and demanded much of our physical preparation because the wind was very fickle. We were very close to the public today and did very close manoeuvres," commented Grael.

"I could hear the narrator commenting on the race and it was cool as hell, even with this outcome. The organization is to be congratulated because it is very interesting to have this contact with the public, many people may not know what it was sport, and when out of the water, began to celebrate and shout Brazil. It was very good."

In the Laser, Robert Scheidt placed third in the Medal Race, but secured his first title in 2014 thanks to a strong qualification stage. The winner of the Medal Race was the Santa Catarina Matheus Dellagnelo, followed by Nick Thompson (GBR).

In the 49er, Dylan Fletcher and Alain Sign (GBR) had already secured gold ahead of the Medal Race. Brazilian duo Dante Bianchi and Thomas Low Beer took silver and André Fonseca and Mario Tinoco picked up bronze.

Dutch Olympic silver medallist Marit Bowmeester placed seventh in the Laser Radial Medal Race to secure the title. She was followed by Erika Reineke (USA) and Hannah Snellgrove (GBR).

Multihull veteran and Seoul 1988 bronze medallist in the Tornado Clinio Freitas and Barcelona 1992 Olympian Claudia Swan rolled back the years to take gold in the Nacra 17. The pair were consistent throughout the week and a Medal Race win sealed the deal

"The wind was completely crazy and we got lucky in picking the right bursts," said Swan post-race.

In the combined 470, the victory went to Sofian Bouvet and Jeremie Mion (FRA). Maria Fernadnda Sesto and Juan de la Fuente (ARG) took the Medal Race win whilst a fourth from the French pair was enough for them to seal it. Henrique Haddad and Bruno Bethlem (BRA) cane in third after a second in the Medal Race.

"We are very pleased and surprised with the result, nine regattas we only lost two for the Brazilians," said Haddad.

"We were anxious in the beginning and now we will get quieter in our next competition in Miami in two weeks. This result was important because from now on we will count not only with the support of Brazil, Navy as well as with the CBVela."

The British dominated the Finn with Giles Scott in the first, followed by Andrew Mills and Mark Andrews. Jorge Zarif, current world champion, was the first Brazilian in fourth place, just two points from the podium.

Patricia Freitas (BRA) had already secured the Women's RS:X victory in advance. Ricardo Santos also won the Men's RS:X title and was happy with his week, "I thought we were going to win, but not undefeated. I was quite pleased with the result and it's always good to train and compete here in the bay," he said.
